The History of Punganur Cattle

A Great Indigenous Heritage in a Small Frame

Punganur cattle are a special indigenous breed associated with the Chittoor region of Andhra Pradesh. They are considered one of India’s distinctive native cattle breeds. The breed gets its name from the Punganur region, and according to the NDDB Dairy Knowledge Portal, the breed was developed under the patronage of the rulers of the Punganur area. Its traditional breeding tract includes Punganur, Vayalpad, Madanapalle and Palamaner.

Over the years, Punganur cattle became known for their small stature, distinctive body structure and hardiness. They are a dual-purpose breed, valued for both milk production and agricultural work. Their ability to survive on dry fodder and adapt to challenging conditions made them an important part of rural life. Their small size and unique characteristics have also made them a notable part of India’s indigenous cattle heritage.

As farming practices and lifestyles changed, the population of Punganur cattle declined, highlighting the need for conservation. The breed is maintained at the Livestock Research Station, Palamaner, as well as by private breeders. Conservation efforts have also received recognition at the national level. In the 2025 breed conservation awards, presented by ICAR, Shri Kudala Ram Das received the Second Prize in the individual category for the conservation of Punganur cattle.

The history of Punganur cattle is not simply the story of a small-sized cow. It is connected with local rulers, traditional agriculture, indigenous genetic diversity and generations of conservation. Preserving rare indigenous breeds today means carrying their history, bloodlines and valuable characteristics forward to future generations. The efforts of organizations such as Nadipathy Goshala in indigenous cattle conservation and selective development also contribute to creating greater awareness about the importance of protecting India’s native cattle heritage.
