The Forgotten Native Cow Breeds of India

Why Preserving India's Indigenous Cattle Heritage Matters More Than Ever

India is home to one of the richest collections of indigenous cattle breeds in the world. For thousands of years, these native cows have supported Indian agriculture, rural livelihoods, and cultural traditions. Each breed has evolved naturally over centuries, adapting to the climate, geography, and farming practices of its region.

However, many of these remarkable breeds are now facing a serious decline. Rapid urbanization, shrinking grazing lands, changing agricultural practices, and the increasing preference for commercial dairy breeds have reduced the population of several indigenous cattle.

Protecting these native breeds is no longer just the responsibility of farmers—it is a responsibility shared by researchers, conservationists, and every citizen who values India's agricultural heritage.

India's Rich Indigenous Cattle Diversity

According to livestock records, India has more than 50 recognized indigenous cattle breeds, each possessing unique characteristics.

Some of the well-known native breeds include:

  • ЁЯРД Punganur (Andhra Pradesh)

  • ЁЯРД Ongole (Andhra Pradesh)

  • ЁЯРД Gir (Gujarat)

  • ЁЯРД Sahiwal (Punjab)

  • ЁЯРД Tharparkar (Rajasthan)

  • ЁЯРД Hallikar (Karnataka)

  • ЁЯРД Vechur (Kerala)

  • ЁЯРД Kankrej (Gujarat)

  • ЁЯРД Krishna Valley (Karnataka & Maharashtra)

  • ЁЯРД Deoni (Maharashtra)

Every one of these breeds has developed characteristics that help it survive in its local environment, making India's indigenous cattle an invaluable genetic resource.

Why Are Native Cow Breeds Disappearing?

Several factors have contributed to the gradual decline of indigenous cattle populations.

Changing Farming Practices

Mechanized agriculture has reduced the traditional dependence on bullocks for farming and transportation.

Crossbreeding

In many areas, indigenous cattle have been crossbred with exotic breeds to increase milk production. While crossbreeding can improve certain production traits, it may also reduce the population of pure indigenous bloodlines if not managed carefully.

Urbanization

As cities expand and apartments replace larger homes, fewer families have the space needed to keep traditional-sized cattle.

Lack of Awareness

Many people are unaware of the importance of preserving indigenous breeds and their unique characteristics.

Declining Grazing Lands

Open grazing areas have become increasingly limited due to changing land use patterns.

Why Indigenous Cows Are Valuable

Native Indian cattle are more than milk-producing animals.

They represent generations of natural adaptation and biodiversity.

Some important characteristics include:

ЁЯМ┐ Excellent adaptation to local climates

ЁЯМ┐ Strong natural disease resistance under appropriate management

ЁЯМ┐ Ability to thrive under diverse environmental conditions

ЁЯМ┐ Long history of supporting sustainable agriculture

ЁЯМ┐ Cultural and traditional significance across India

Each breed contributes something unique to India's livestock diversity.

The Importance of Bloodline Conservation

Once an original bloodline disappears, it cannot easily be recreated.

This is why preserving authentic indigenous cattle through responsible breeding and proper record-keeping is extremely important.

Maintaining pure bloodlines helps preserve:

  • Original physical characteristics

  • Natural adaptability

  • Valuable genetic diversity

  • Historical and cultural heritage

Conservation today protects options for future generations.

Research Plays a Vital Role

Conserving indigenous cattle requires patience, scientific observation, and long-term commitment.

Researchers carefully study:

  • Parentage

  • Physical characteristics

  • Growth patterns

  • Reproductive performance

  • Breed consistency across generations

Meaningful conservation is built over years—not months.

Nadipathy Goshala's Contribution to Indigenous Cattle Conservation

For more than 18 years, Dr. P. Krishnam Raju has dedicated his efforts to conserving indigenous cattle through natural selective breeding and careful bloodline preservation.

At Nadipathy Goshala, the focus extends beyond maintaining cattle. The mission includes preserving authentic indigenous bloodlines while responsibly developing naturally smaller companion cattle through long-term research.

Today, Nadipathy Goshala is home to:

  • Nadipathy Miniature Cows

  • Nadipathy Micro Miniature Cows

  • Nadipathy Nano Cows

  • Original Punganur breeding lines

Visitors can observe multiple generations of cattle, reflecting years of systematic conservation and breeding records.

Why Conservation Matters for Future Generations

Every indigenous breed that disappears represents a permanent loss of valuable genetic diversity.

Future generations deserve the opportunity to learn about and benefit from these remarkable animals.

Conservation is not simply about preserving cattle—it is about protecting India's agricultural knowledge, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.

How Everyone Can Help

You don't have to own a goshala to contribute.

You can support indigenous cattle conservation by:

✅ Learning about native breeds

✅ Visiting responsible conservation centers

✅ Sharing accurate information

✅ Encouraging awareness among younger generations

✅ Supporting organizations working to preserve indigenous cattle

Even small actions can make a meaningful difference.

Conclusion

India's indigenous cow breeds are living symbols of our agricultural history and biodiversity. Their survival depends on awareness, responsible conservation, and long-term commitment.

As several native breeds continue to decline, the importance of protecting authentic bloodlines becomes even greater.

Through dedicated research spanning more than 18 years, Dr. P. Krishnam Raju and Nadipathy Goshala are contributing to the conservation of rare indigenous cattle, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate and benefit from India's remarkable native breeds.

Preserving indigenous cattle is not only about protecting animals—it is about preserving a priceless part of India's identity.

5. How many cows do you currently have?

Answer: Today, Nadipathy Goshala has more than 10,600 cows across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

6. How long did it take to reduce the size of a 5-foot cow to under 2 feet?

Answer: The entire research journey took 18 years.

Development timeline:

  • From 5 feet to under 3 feet – 6 years (Miniature Punganur)

  • From 3 feet to 2 feet – 4 years (Miniature)

  • From 2 feet to under 2 feet – 4 years (Micro Miniature)

  • From under 2 feet to around 1 foot – 3 years (Nadipathy Nano)

Today, these cattle are categorized into three unique groups:

  • Miniature

  • Micro Miniature

  • Nadipathy Nano

7. In how many states do you currently operate Goshalas?

Answer: At present, Nadipathy Goshalas are located in two Indian states:

  • Andhra Pradesh

  • Telangana

8. Why did you decide to develop smaller cows?

Answer: In ancient Indian tradition, almost every household had a cow. Over time, large homes became smaller, and apartment living became common, making it difficult for families to keep traditional-sized cows.

Just as bonsai trees, aquarium fish, and small companion dog breeds were developed to suit modern lifestyles, I envisioned creating naturally smaller Indian cows that families could comfortably raise at home.

Through Nadipathy Acupuncture (Treatment) methodology and nearly 10 generations of selective breeding research, we successfully developed cows from around 5 feet in height to nearly 1 foot, while preserving indigenous bloodlines through natural breeding.

9. How many people have received cows from Nadipathy Goshala?

Answer: We have supplied cows to more than one lakh (100,000) people.

Because of these efforts, cows are now being raised not only in villages but also in towns, cities, and even apartments.

In 2013, I introduced the concept of Cow Hug Therapy, and today many countries around the world are recognizing the importance of spending time with cows for emotional well-being.

10. Which prominent personalities have received your cows?

Answer: Our cows have been presented to several distinguished personalities, including:

  • Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi – 6 cows and 1 bull

  • Hon'ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath – 1 cow and 1 bull

  • Former President of the United States, Mr. Donald Trump – 2 cows and 1 bull

  • Business leader Shri Anant Ambani

  • Several Chief Ministers, Ministers, Spiritual Leaders, Industrialists, and Film Personalities.

11. What is your future goal?

Answer: My dream is to see one cow in every household.

Our long-term goal is to develop and make available a naturally bred 2-foot-tall cow and bull capable of producing around 2 liters of milk per day, at an affordable price of ₹10,000, so that every Indian family can once again have Gomata (Mother Cow) in their home.

12. Do you expect any support from the Government?

Answer: Personally, I do not seek anything from the Government.

I have only one humble request:

"The Cow should be declared the National Animal of India."

Jai Gomata! ЁЯРДЁЯЩП
